Apple A8

L'Apple A8 est un SoC (Système sur Puce) haute performance de type ARM présenté au grand public en Septembre 2014 par l'introduction des iPhone 6 et iPhone 6 Plus. Les deux noyaux processeur voient des fréquences de fonctionnement légèrement supérieures par rapport aux deux cœurs que compte l'Apple A7 (1,4 GHz contre 1,3 Ghz), les processeurs sont basés sur la seconde génération de l'architecture 64 Bit d'Apple adoubée "Cyclone 2". L'A8 intègre par ailleurs un circuit graphique PowerVR Series 6 Rogue GX6450 et un contrôleur mémoire LPDDR3-1333 d'une largeur de bus de 2x 32 Bit.

Architecture 

Avec l'avènement de Cyclone 2, Apple s'est lancé sur l'optimisation de l'efficience de ses puces sur le plan des performances par cycle d'horloge par rapport à l'architecture Cyclone premier du nom (Apple A7) : la différence est d'environ 10 à 15%. Ni le Qualcomm Krait et ni l'ARM Cortex-A57 ne peuvent égaler l'architecture Cyclone 2 sur le nombre d'instructions par cycle d'horloge IPC. Les modifications exactes de l'architecture n'ont pas été révélées mais il est certainement question de caches et de registres plus importants mais aussi d'optimisation sur la prédiction de branchement. Étant basée sur l'architecture ARMv8, la puce Cyclone 2 est de type 64-bit.

Performances

Grâce à un impressionnant ratio performances par cycle d'horloge, le processeur dual-core Apple cadencé à 1,4 GHz est un rival extrêmement sérieux pour les autres SoC haut-de-gamme tels que la Nvidia Tegra K1 (4 cores @ 2,3 GHz) ou encore le Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (4 cores @ 2,7 GHz). Si les modèles quad-core prennent le large en tests synthétiques multithreadés, l'Apple A8 offre des performances supérieures en tâches monothreadées, bien plus représentatives de l'expérience d'utilisation de tous les jours : navigation Internet, lecture vidéo. Dans son ensemble, la puce A8 est l'un des SoC pour Smartphones les plus véloces Fin 2014.

Circuit graphique

Le SoC intègre un circuit graphique PowerVR Series 6 (Rogue) comprenant 4 clusters. Chaque cluster embarque quatre ALU FP16 et deux ALU FP32, ce qui donne à des performances shader légèrement en hausse par rapport à l'ancien G6430. La fréquence de fonctionnement serait relativement faible, 450 MHz pour des performances brutes de 115 GFLOPS. Ce choix permet de contenir la consommation énergétique. Selon les résultats obtenus dans nos tests synthétiques, le GX6450 surpasse aisément l'Adreno 330 en termes de performances 3D, mais il ne peut rien contre la Nvidia Tegra K1 néanmoins bien plus énergivore. Le GX6450 est l'une des cartes graphiques pour Smartphones les plus rapides du moment (2014), aucun titre même les plus gourmands n’arrive à mettre la puce à genoux, qu'importe la résolution.

Consommation énergétique

En contraste à ses précédents SoC, Apple a confié la fabrication de ses A8 à TSMC et non plus à Samsung. Grâce à un tout nouveau procédé d'une lithographie de 20 nm, le SoC embarque un nombre impressionnant de 2 milliards de transistors sur 89mm². La consommation énergétique devrait être au niveau des autres SoC haute-performance de chez Qualcomm ou encore Samsung.
