NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q
La Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 avec technologie Max-Q est un GPU mobile haut de gamme de la série Pascal. Elle est conçue pour les portables fins et légers, et elle est de 10 - 15 % moins puissante qu'une GTX 1080 classique pour portables, en fonction des capacités de refroidissement. La fréquence de base (1 101 - 1 290 MHz) est également bien plus faible que sur une GTX 1080 classique (1 566 MHz, au moins -18%), tout comme le Boost (1 278 - 1 458 MHz contre 1 733 MHz, soit au moins -16 %). La fréquence de la mémoire est en revanche identique.
La fréquence n'est pas la seule différence par rapport à une GTX 1080 classique. Les pilotes de la version Max-Q ont été optimisés pour l'efficience (et non pour les performances), il y a des convertisseurs de tension optimisés pour 1V, des méthodes de refroidissement haut de gamme, et une limitation des nuisances sonores à 40 dB (avec des ajustements de la fréquence pour garantir tout cela, à tout moment).
Les performances sont plus proches de la GeForce GTX 1070 classique (Max-P) que de la GTX 1080 (au moins dans l'Asus Zephyrus). De ce fait, les jeux les plus exigeants devraient pouvoir être joués en Full HD avec le niveau de détail maximum (voir les tests ci-dessous).
La puce GP104 est fabriquée en 16 nm FinFET par TSMC, et propose de nombreuses nouvelles fonctionnalités. Le DisplayPort 1.4 ("ready"), le HDMI 2.0b, le HDR, le SMP (Simultaneous Multi-Projection), et le décodage et l'encodage vidéo H.265 amélioré (PlayReady 3.0), ne forment qu'une partie de ces améliorations.
La consommation de la version Max-Q est réduite par rapport à une GTX 1080 classique pour portables, et se situe entre 90 et 110 W (TGP) selon Nvidia.
